WASTE TO WONDER: STUDENTS REINVENT SUNSEEKER’S LUXURY MATERIALS FOR A CIRCULAR FUTURE

Sunseeker has partnered with SUEZ (recycling and waste management) and Arts University Bournemouth (AUB) on an innovative creative project aimed at reimagining the future of textile sustainability. Titled “Designing Textiles for a Zero Waste Future,” the initiative designed by SUEZ challenged AUB students to explore the circular use of materials using Sunseeker’s luxury fabric and leather offcuts.

The brief encouraged students to rethink traditional design by creating pieces that could be not only crafted from reclaimed materials but also disassembled and repurposed into new items, extending the lifecycle of valuable resources and reducing waste.

Drawing inspiration from things like a trip to Japan or a family garden, students experimented with a wide range of techniques including dyeing, etching, laser cutting and embroidery. The results were both imaginative and practical, demonstrating how premium materials typically associated with luxury yachts can be transformed into versatile, reconfigurable products.

Among the standout concepts were leather water bottle holders designed to evolve into keyrings, wallets or belts, and interactive wall hangings capable of being repurposed into functional upholstery. Each project reflected a thoughtful approach to sustainability, combining creativity with circular design principles.

Sunseeker was invited to AUB to view the final presentations, where students showcased how materials used across the brand’s globally renowned yachts could be given new life in unexpected ways. The collaboration highlighted both the potential of circular design thinking and the importance of partnerships between industry and education in driving innovation.

This initiative forms part of Sunseeker’s broader sustainability strategy and supports their ongoing commitment to maintaining zero waste to landfill for its fabric materials.

In addition to creative collaborations like this, Sunseeker is already repurposing fabric offcuts into practical solutions within its own operations. For example, these materials are used to create reusable bags for transporting exterior cushions between manufacturing sites, helping to reduce reliance on single-use plastics.

Projects like this really do exemplify how small meaningful changes today can build a better tomorrow. We’ve been incredibly impressed by the students’ creativity and hope our small contribution will inspire them to lead the way in designing the circular fabric solutions of the future.”
