Trending: Why everyone is going to Göcek this summer
Intrepid travellers are swerving the usual summer destinations in search of fresh and novel adventures in 2024. Enter Gocek, nestled along the pristinely beautiful shoreline of Turkey.
Renowned as one of Europe's busiest yachting points, this small and charming town boasts seven marinas catering to seasoned sailors and luxury yacht owners alike.
Göcek is also home to the stunning Göcek Islands. Turquoise waters, secluded coves and lush greenery, accessible only by boat make for the perfect hideaway or adventure playground.
Ideas for your intrepid itinerary…
1. Although we think all the best adventures are had gliding along the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts we recommend setting the tone of your journey inland with a visit to Istanbul. An epically beautiful city where you can honour ancient history in the context of a buzzing contemporary culture. Visit the Hagia Sophia and the Grand Bazaar for both mind and eye-opening cultural experiences.
2. A quick flight from Instabul to Milas-Bodrum Airport and you can meet your yacht in Bodrum to embark on the first leg of your voyage (unless of course you decide to momentarily stick around for the lively nightlife).
3. Glide on to the seaside town of Marmaris, a Mediterranean port that is the de facto capital of the Turkish Riviera, and home to a lively urban and cultural centre ringed by a verdant pine and olive forest that slopes down to meet the water’s edge.
4. Marmaris is as much a town as it is a region, two days spent cruising here allow for exploration of the Bozburun Peninsula and its quaint towns of Orhaniye and Selimiye, the latter of which is, by most accounts, what Marmaris was before discovery by holiday makers.
5. From Marmaris, head toward Dalyan, a picturesque town astride Dalyan Creek, where a few hours viewing the ruins of Kaunos, an ancient Roman city, and the mud baths at Sultaniye hot springs on the edge of Köyceğiz Lake is just the natural salve your skin will need after a few days under the relentless Mediterranean sun.
6. Ancient explorer desires fulfilled; it’s time to play amongst the many coves of the Gocek islands. Crystal waters, gorgeous scenery and secluded bays make it the perfect spot for sporty adventures or relaxation.
There really are few destinations with such a rich cultural backdrop to our civilisations history that can be enjoyed alongside such extraordinary untouched natural beauty.
Prime season for Turkey is April-October. Keep your eyes open for the Sunseeker Ocean 182, the latest addition to the Ocean family, rumour has it she's serenely coasting around this gorgeous region on her summer tour.
